This is a Department  enforcing Laws to ensure Consumer Protection.  The Consumer Protection Act and the Standards of Weights &  Measures Act are the major Acts implemented by this Department.

          Under the Consumer Protection Act, the Department has set up a District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum and Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for  speedy and inexpensive redressal of Consumer grievances.  These consumer fora  have so far received  61 cases and disposed 54  of them.  Out of the cases decided, 98% went in favour of the consumers.    

          The State cum District Consumer Protection Council is established giving representation to Panchayat members, Voluntary Organization, Mahilasamajam, merchants,  prominent persons etc. to promote and protect the interest of consumers.

          The Department is conducting verification and stamping of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments etc. to  ensure accuracy in weighment and measurement.  Due to the implementation of Packaged Commodities Rules, packaged commodities are now available to the consumers within the marked price.

          The Deputy Conservator of Forest , Lakshadweep is the Ex-officio Secretary and the  Collector cum Development Commissioner is the Ex-officio  Controller of  the Legal Metrology. There is one Assistant Controller and one Senior Inspector at Headquarters.  There are three units  under one Inspector each in the islands of Kavaratti, Andrott and Kadmat.  The islands of Kavaratti and Agatti are under the jurisdiction of Inspector at Kavaratti and the Inspector at Andrott covers the islands of Andrott, Kalpeni and Minicoy.  The northern group of islands  i.e. Amini, Kadmat, Chetlat and Bitra are under the  jurisdiction of the Inspector at Kadmat
